How we observe memory may change the questions we can ask
CLEM, the method used in this study, matches targets identified by fluorescence with the fine connection structures visible under electron microscopy. It allows researchers to examine memory-related cell ensembles down to the arrangement of their connections. OIST’s explanation ↗
Separate from theories of memory, this card follows what has become possible to measure. If the method—including labeling, registration and analysis—spreads to other laboratories, it could open new questions. Because it does not provide continuous observation of a living brain, the next focus is how to combine it with activity recordings and selective interventions.
