Cell-response prediction / perturbation data / Virtual Cell Challenge
Assess expansion into previously unhandled cells and interventions, not just dataset size.
An investment programme or benchmark design does not demonstrate disease prediction or drug-discovery success. The $1.8 billion scope includes prior investment and resources, not only new funding.
Added cells and interventions, independently evaluated predictive performance, and data-release and reuse conditions.
What would change our view: Do not equate growing datasets with generalization if predictions fail in unmeasured settings or additional data do not improve them.
A prospective test proposal, not a prediction score. A graph connection does not validate this hypothesis.

Reading at the time: The Virtual Biology Initiative expands joint experimental-data infrastructure. Separately, Arc’s 2026 challenge tests response prediction without providing perturbation outcomes in the target cells.
